New studies done recently have shown that biking is perhaps the mode of transportation that best promotes consumerism, as compared to walking, driving, and public transportation. People on bikes are more likely to stop at multiple destinations and make more frequent trips than those travelling by one of the alternatives. Walkers do not purchase as much due to the inconvenience of carrying many items and are less likely to stop at multiple destinations due to time constrictions. Drivers tend to be willing to purchase more, but due to parking availability and costs, make fewer trips. Those using public transportation recognize the inconvenience of making multiple steps and then having to wait just to pay for another trip, and also tend to purchase less. Bikers, on the other hand, are more likely to return to destinations, eventually spending more than drivers because they frequent the businesses more often and do not have to worry about other costs of transportation. With Chicago’s expanding bike infrastructure, this could spell good news for businesses, especially bars, as noted in the above linked article.
It looks like supporting local business is just another reason to hop on a bike instead of driving. What if biking can curb climate change and stimulate the economy at the same time!? Obviously this is an exaggeration, but more and more reasons to hop on a bike are coming to light, so it’s no wonder that Chicago, as well as many cities across the world, are stepping up the bike-friendly infrastructure. Join the movement!
